Coconut Oil…Eat It, Rub It, Love It!

Ever wonder how some people appear healthier and more beautiful than others?  Well I secretly think it’s because they use coconut oil.  It’s seriously a miracle food!  In fact, the coconut palm is often referred to as “the tree of life” among Asian and Pacific Islanders because of its wide range of uses…from traditional medicines, to food and drink, to body and hair tonic and more.

New studies are revealing just how beneficial coconut oil is for your health.  Did you know that by adding just one tablespoon per day to your diet you can increase your metabolism and help you burn fat?!?  Read on to find out how.

That’s right, coconut oil is the ultimate fuel for the body.  It can be hard to wrap your head around the fact that consuming fat can actually help you lose fat.  Because coconut oil is considered a medium-chain triglyceride it is metabolized like a carbohydrate by the body rather than being turned into fat.  Because they are metabolized this way, they are funneled directly to the liver and conve
rted into a boost of energy for you.

This burst of energy has a stimulating effect on the entire body, so consuming coconut oil can actually help increase your metabolism which in turn helps you lose weight.  Pretty amazing stuff!

Coconut oil not only does all that, but it also is an antiviral and antibacterial powerhouse.  Here’s how….the lauric acid in coconut oil is very strong and is great for people with immune deficiencies.  It is able to kill harmful bacteria, yeast, fungi, and viruses by penetrating and disrupting the fatty outside layer of these organisms.

Some of the bacteria the active ingredient in coconut oil can kill are ones that are responsible for food poising, urinary infections, sinus infections, and stomach ulcers.  Capric acid, another medium-chain fatty acid found in coconut oil, has been shown to have antiviral effects against HIV, as well as measles and herpes simplex, among other viruses.

I have been using coconut for awhile now on my skin and hair and love the benefits its shown me.  It’s relieved any dryness or flaking I’ve had, and I feel like it’s also helped with fine lines and wrinkles.   I love to put a small amount in my hair to keep it shiny and healthy.  I use it for my main form of moisturizer on my entire body.  It’s delicious to eat as well, and literally melts in your mouth.

The best coconut oil I recommend is a product with the following features:

-Cold-pressed or expeller pressed for the freshest flavor

-Extra virgin (minimal processing, unrefined and not deodorized with harsh solvents)

-Certified USDA Organic

To add coconut oil to your diet, here is a general rule.  Use one tablespoon per 50 lbs of body weight.  However, smaller amounts wills till be beneficial, great results can be received by just adding even one tablespoon per day.

Please comment and let me know your thoughts, if you use coconut oil already, or if you’re going to start using it?  If you have any great recipes to share or any other tips for using coconut oil.  Would love to hear them!

  1. Kris Burrell:

It’s fantastic on toast, and on fresh, steamed veggies instead of butter.

  2. Charlie Boy Humphries:

I just started day two of using this stuff and it has been great. I added it to green peas and added salt and it was good, on bread with a little sugar was great and in my milk with cereal was even good. Also made some biscuits with oil in it and it didn’t turn out great cause I cooked it wrong was still good with scraping it with a spoon.
